POSITION STATEMENT
The Association of Pigeon Veterinarians believes that any pigeon
participating in a show or race sanctioned by national pigeon
organization be required to have been vaccinated against Pigeon
Paramyxovirus (PMV-1)
The only licensed and approved vaccine in the U.S.A. for
PMV-1 is the oil based product produced by Maine Biologic
Laboratory. It is an effective and save vaccine.
The European product, Colombovac, is a good vaccine. It is
not approved for use in the U.S. and there is concern about how
it is handled when shipped from Europe. If it is not kept
refrigerated its effectiveness may be compromised.
The use of the live Newcastle Disease vaccine for chickens (LaSota)
for immunization against PMV-1 in pigeons is not acceptable.
Pigeon Paramyxovirus differs serologically and biochemically
from Newcastle Disease in chickens. We believe it poses no
threat to the chicken industry.
