PIGEON DAY IS A HIT WITH KIDS
"Pigeon Day" at the Norman Public Library has been an annual success for Wayne and Lynette Haws of the Greater Oklahoma Limited Racing Pigeon Club.
Every year, in June, Wayne and Lynette take approximately twenty pigeons to display at the Norman, Oklahoma library for young people to enjoy during their school summer break. As a special treat, they also bring trained pigeons to entertain the children.
With the help of fellow member, Jerry Pruett, they conducted two homing pigeon releases so the group could witness the birds in action. The crowd was awed and excited to learn more about them.

Ms. Basha Hartley, of the Norman Public Library, stated that it was a pleasure to include "Pigeon Day" in their activities each year. The library sent out notices to over 10,000 children to let them know about the opportunity. Library personnel conducted story times at regular intervals, followed by the
pigeon display. Ms. Hartley explained that she is careful to coordinate the information to lead into the viewing of the birds.

These kids got a closer look at baby homers.
Both children and their parents were impressed and amazed with the pigeons displayed and the opportunity to handle the birds.
People who wanted more information signed up for packets to be mailed to them. These were sent out the following day. Wayne and Lynette will follow up with the requests as well.
This is a fun way to educate children and their parents about pigeon keeping. |
