USPS Shipping Update - May 17, 2007
The following is an update provided by the AU Lobbyist/Lawyer, Greg Smith.

We have heard from many AU members that shipping has improved dramatically since USPS signed contracts with FedEx. We appreciate your patience as we worked with the USPS, FedEx and the Bird Shippers of America to make sure your needs were represented. The result has been very positive for most shippers, but where members are still having problems with shipping we are continuing our efforts.

The USPS has distributed a new bulletin regarding shipment of live birds (http://www.usps.com/cpim/ftp/bulletin/2007/html/pb22205/updt.6.1.html). This directive specifically refers to the type

SHIPPING UPDATE-September 18, 2006
As previously reported, the USPS has indicated that they have negotiated a contract with Federal Express. That contract will require them to carry lives as mail. The AU has been communicating with USPS representatives in Washington DC to help address some issues Federal Express was concerned with. Most of those issues have been resolved.

The AU lobbyist, Greg, will be attending several meetings in the next few weeks to help continue finalizing other details and working with the USPS to ensure this is a smooth transition and one that works for members shipping pigeons. We

SHIPPING UPDATE/Improvements-August 25, 2006
The AU has continued efforts to work with the United States Postal Service (USPS) to ease shipping restraints for members. We have reported the progress of S. 2395 and asked recently for your assistance writing Senators and elected officials to support the proposed legislation, which would require all air carriers that have contracts with the USPS to carry lives as mail. We appreciate your help. Every indication is that this legislative effort highly motivated the carriers to come to the table and reach an agreement with the USPS.

We have also reported that the USPS facilitated communication between

Shipping Update - March 9, 2006

The AU, along with other hobbyist and interest groups, has continued to voice our concerns to the USPS about the lack of shipping options available to members.

As a result, the USPS has distributed a new directive to their employees emphasizing that all possible routing options should be considered for lives.  Please view the policy, please go to (HERE).

Shippers are asked to contact the Expedited Services Offices (ESO) to prearrange shipping.  The USPS personnel at these facilities will be able to advise where to take the shipments for routing and the schedules available.  This new directive stresses making every effort to accept and ship lives, including ground

Shipping Incident Report
We are aware that some members are experiencing difficulty shipping via the USPS. In some cases, shipments may be legitimately refused. There are a number of things that may contribute to that:

* Airlines have consolidated many flights so there are fewer available on which to ship, and * Some airlines are indicating they won't take live animals if a transfer is involved.

If you experience problems, it will be helpful if you fill out the report  http://www.pigeon.org/shipping_incident.htm , so we can provide that information to our national contact to determine if proper procedure is being followed. This
