UPCOMING MOVIE TO BRING NEW INTEREST TO HOMING PIGEONS
By Deone Roberts, AU Sport Development
A new movie coming out in 2005 is sure to spark interest in the younger set this spring. You may recall the effect the movie “101 Dalmatians” had on children and their desire for the dogs as pets. They looked so cute!
Valiant is a full-length cartoon feature, done on the order of the movie Shrek. It is sure to be as entertaining with celebrity voices creating the image of the characters. People will surely want to know more about the sport.
Because this may mean more people getting involved in the hobby, we want to make sure we are dependably ready to help provide the right information and mentorship. This will help guide potential new members in the most responsible manner.
This is a great time to get information to schools and youth groups. Making presentations to these groups, especially while the movie is showing in public theaters, will help guide the interest in a positive direction.
At the same time that we look forward to the release of the Valiant movie, National History Day contests are underway across the country. The contest topic for 2005 is “communication.” This has stimulated increased requests for information from the American Racing Pigeon Union with regard to pigeons used in the wars.
Schools will likely welcome the chance to hear more about the birds and see some in person. This is also a good time to get books and tapes into school and public libraries.
So whether it’s responding to curiosity prompted by the movie or assisting school children with research or making presentations in your local area, we have great opportunities to share the sport.
The AU has materials and resources available to members. If we can help you prepare presentations, give us a call at 405-848-5801 or email us at
