2009 AU Junior Membership Contest Winner
The American Racing Pigeon Union’s Junior Membership Contest was started to highlight more about junior members than racesheet results alone. Juniors are a big part of our racing community that we want to encourage.
This is the seventh year Ed Minvielle, Michael Gantner and now Hano Troll, have teamed up to represent Benzing in presenting the winner with a new electronic timing system. Supporting youth members is close to their hearts and they have shown it year after year by donating the system. Ed explained, “It is my hope that we could encourage and inspire young flyers as I was encouraged as a boy.”
The contest tested the judges’ ability to easily select a winner from the outstanding essays. The entries exemplified the excellence we recognize in AU youth membership. This year’s contest was to write an essay about the best piece of advice pertaining to the sport they received and what it did for them. Content was important, as was following directions carefully. This year’s winner was right on point.
The 2009 AU Junior Membership Contest winner is Jesse Grigg from Clover, South Carolina. He is a member of the Filbert Racing Pigeon Club. Jesse’s win was announced at the 2009 AU convention banquet hosted by the New England Sport Promotion RPC Association in Massachusetts.
We spoke with Jesse’s parents who revealed to us the disciplined character of this young man. He gets up early every day to get his birds ready for training. He is a young man of few words – just the basic “yes ma’am, yes sir” kind of guy. He goes to Jeff’s house (fellow club member) to clock in Jeff’s birds while Jeff does the race releases. Jesse had to sit out a year of racing because of his school schedule.
Upon hearing about his win, the young man of few words was too excited to keep still any longer. The entire club is excited and proud of him. They celebrated with a crab boil gathering, complete with a picture of Jesse and his bird on the cake. The club has renewed their mission to gather regularly, mentor beginners and reach out to include wives and family in their activities. Jesse’s parents do not race but are eager to support Jesse’s interest.
Jesse, our congratulations to you and best wishes for a long and winning racing career!
